Androcur 50 mg 50 tablets
Androcur 50 mg contains Cyproterone Acetate and belongs to group of medications called steroidal antiandrogens. Antiandrogens such as Cyproterone block the effect of the hormone Testosterone. This causes a reduction in the production of Testosterone in the testicles. Androcur is used to treat advanced prostate cancer, for control of level and production of testosterone in male body, for control of libido in severe hypersexuality and/or sexual deviation in the adult male.
Indications: Steroidal antiandrogen, Testosterone hormon control therapy
Side effects: Cyproterone can cause weakness and tiredness on the beggining of the therapy. After about the third month, your body will become used to the Cyproterone and this side effect should be lessened.
The most frequently observed adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in patients receiving Androcur are decreased libido, erectile dysfunction and reversible inhibition of spermatogenesis.
The most serious ADRs in patients receiving Androcur are hepatic toxicity, benign and malignant liver tumours which may lead to intra-abdominal haemorrhage and thromboembolic events.
Contraindications: You should not use Androcur or consult with your doctor if you:
have hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients of Androcur
have liver diseases (including Dubin-Johnson syndrome and Rotor syndrome)
have malignant tumours (except for carcinoma of the prostate)
have previous or existing liver tumours
have wasting diseases (because of transient catabolic action)
have a history of or existing thrombosis or embolism
have severe diabetes with vascular changes
have sickle cell anaemia
have severe chronic depression
have meningioma or a history of meningioma
are taking other medications that may interact with Androcur
Androcur should not be given to youths under 18 or to those whose bone maturation and testicular development are incomplete.
Use and dosage: The initial dose is 1 tablet Androcur 50 mg twice daily, after the morning and evening meals. If the desired results are achieved, the therapeutic effect should be maintained with the lowest possible dose. The recommended dose for Cyproterone tablets is 200 mg to 300 mg (4 to 6 tablets) daily, divided into 2 to 3 doses and taken after meals.
For men who have had an orchiectomy (removal of testicles), a lower dose of 100 mg to 200 mg daily in divided doses is recommended. For more information please refer to the manufacturer leaflet or consult your doctor.
